ABOUT GOLDENS

The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular breeds and has one of the most well documented and successful breeding histories among dogs.  They were bred in England in the 1800's, and brought to America in 1900 where it was recognized as a distinct breed in 1912.  Bred as a hunting dog and known for its soft mouth at retrieving game from cold waters, it quickly became a great show and obedience dog, and an extremely popular pet.
Golden Retrievers are medium to large in size with a shoulder height of 20-24 inches and weighing 55-75 pounds.  The English Golden Retriever has a blocky head, stocky, big boned body. They have a dark pigmentation to their skin and are cream to almost white in color while the American Golden Retriever has a more rounded head and stands taller than the English breed and also has a coat in various shades of gold (it should not be red).  They have a double coat, the outer coat is smooth, wavy and water resistant.  Their undercoat is thick, soft and helps them stay warm in winter and cool in summer.  They shed heavily and need to be brushed at least twice a week.  Their ears should always be kept clean and dry. Grooming care is not difficult if kept up.
quality bred Golden Retriever is calm (laid back) in nature and gets along very well with children, being gentle and patient.  They also get along well with other dogs and household pets.  They are generally not a barker, unless startled, which makes them not a very good guard dog.  They are a very devoted family member and are a noble, sensitive, self confident and intelligent breed.  They are easily adaptable and eager to please.  I once read that the difference between a male and female Golden is that the female says "love me, love me, love me," and the male says " I love you, I love you, I love you"  which I have truely experienced first hand and believe this to be true.  They are a very loving and loveable breed!
The Golden is easily trainable and are not good with harsh treatment so excessive strictness is not recommended for this breed.  They learn quickly making them great for therapy and service dogs.  As with all dogs obedience classes are recommended.
As with many large dogs they have an above average need for exercise although they will adapt to the routine of their family.  They desire frequent attention as they love to be loved.  Being Retrievers, they love to play fetch along with other games, and love to swim.  They are not ment to be kept outside, as they are a very social breed and crave love and attention from their human family.  This is a great family oriented breed and in choosing a Golden Retriever you are aquiring a truly priceless animal / family member.

In purchasing a Golden Retriever from Clark Meadow Goldens we are breeding for the quality of the breed.  We have our females and studs go through the proper clearances for eyes, heart and hips to assure you that these genetic issues that can be found amongst Golden's won't be found in the well bred offspring you would be taking home.  We only breed the animals that show exceptional temperament. intelligence, and show qualities.  With hands on care each and every day, we will socialize our pups from the second they are born .  You will only get the best of the breed from us.  Before taking your new family member home may I suggest a few great reading materials to get you aquainted with the breed.
